Incident at Incheon International Airport
On July 12, 2024, actor Byeon Woo-seok faced significant backlash after an incident at Incheon International Airport. As Byeon was getting ready to fly to Hong Kong for his “2024 Asia Fan Meeting Tour – Summer Letter,” his security team drew criticism for their handling of the situation. They used bright flashlights to keep people from seeing the actor, which quickly upset many.
The incident happened while Byeon was in the airport lounge and was caught on video. The footage went viral on social media, amassing over 2 million views on platform X. The Korea Times reported that the original poster (OP) of the video, while at the airport lounge with their family, recounted how security personnel used strong flashlights to prevent people from watching Byeon. One of those affected was a young boy, highlighting the excessive nature of the security measures.
Public Backlash and Apologies
The response from the public was quick and harsh, with many expressing their shock and frustration. Netizens questioned whether the security measures were too aggressive and whether they respected public space.
In response to the criticism, Lee Hag-jae, President of Incheon International Airport Corporation, addressed the situation, stating, “This was an unforeseen situation. No private security firm has acted so absurdly or excessively in the past.”
Lee noted that this was the first time such an incident had happened at the airport, as no other security firm had acted so aggressively before. He promised to set new guidelines for private security firms and increase penalties to prevent future issues.
The head of the security company publicly apologized, admitting their mistake. “We deeply apologize for causing discomfort to the public,” he said in an interview with News1.
Varo Entertainment, Byeon’s agency, also issued an apology, stating,
“We deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused to airport users due to security measures when our artist departed from Incheon International Airport on July 12. Moving forward, we will conduct more thorough checks and exercise greater caution to prevent similar inconveniences to airport users and the public. We apologize once again for any concern caused.”
Byeon Woo-Seok’s Positive Fan Interaction
Despite the controversy, Byeon Woo-seok revealed a different side of himself at the airport. He took time to warmly engage with fans, signing autographs and accepting gifts, which was deeply appreciated by those who came to see him.
This gesture of kindness stood in stark contrast to the negative aspects of the security incident. According to the Times of India, a moment captured in slow motion showed Byeon gently pushing down his manager’s hand, which had risen to either shield or guide him. This gesture demonstrated his awareness and consideration, aiming to prevent any perception of being overly protective or dismissive of his fans, particularly in light of the recent criticisms aimed at his security team.
