Protests Erupt Across Beirut

Violent protests erupted in Beirut and its southern suburbs after the United States, Israel and Lebanon signed a trilateral framework agreement in Washington.

Footage filmed on Friday shows protesters carrying Lebanese and Hezbollah flags, blocking major roads, burning tyres and clashing with Lebanese security forces. Lebanese soldiers were deployed to contain the unrest, while security forces tried to put out fires, reopen roads and push back crowds.

Protesters Reject Agreement

Protesters denounced the framework, accusing the government of betraying the country.

Jad Khalifeh said, “This agreement will not work, no way. We will bring it down,” adding, “This is an agreement where they are selling us out and betraying us with the blood of the martyrs.”

Ali Qashi, another protester, accused Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam of aligning with what he described as ‘Zionist’ positions. “Anyone who wants to recognise Israel is my enemy, just as Israel is my enemy. Joseph Aoun is my enemy just like Israel is his enemy,” he added.

Framework And US Support

The unrest followed the signing of the framework by the US, Israel and Lebanon, which Washington said would establish “a clear and structured process to restore Lebanon’s sovereignty, disarm Hizballah and dismantle its terrorist infrastructure, and enable Israel to return to its borders once that threat to its citizens is removed,” according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Under the framework, Washington has also pledged 100 million USD (87.7 million EUR) in humanitarian assistance and more than 30 million USD (26.3 million EUR) in support for the Lebanese Armed Forces.
