Return of Formula 1 to Turkey
Turkey announced on Friday that Formula 1 racing will return to the popular Istanbul Park circuit from 2027 for a period of five years, during an official event attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Footage shows Erdogan, accompanied by F1 representatives and government officials, marking the launch of the racetrack while fans lined the circuit as a Red Bull car powered down the street. The Turkish president was also presented with a commemorative Formula One steering wheel during the event.
Erdogan Highlights National Strength and Confidence
The president said that this return represents a major boost for both the sport and Turkey following a five-year hiatus.
“Turkey’s re-inclusion in the Formula 1 calendar is attributable to our country’s strong organisational capabilities and modern infrastructure in the fields of sport and health. In recent years, I see this as a new sign of the great confidence placed in the region’s role as an island of stability,” said Erdogan.
“As Turkey, we will not let this trust down again, and we will host the races with impeccable organisation in every respect,” he added.
History of Istanbul Park in Formula 1
The Istanbul Park circuit has previously hosted the world championship nine times, between 2005 and 2011, as well as in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new deal will see the race take place until the 2031 calendar.
The decision follows the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, both of which were removed from this season’s calendar due to escalating regional conflict in the Middle East.
