Air New Zealand is preparing to launch a new feature that allows economy passengers to sleep during long flights. The airline will introduce bunk bed-style sleeping pods on its newest aircraft, offering a new level of comfort for those traveling long distances.
New Sleeping Pods on Board
The new system, called Economy Skynest, will be available on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner planes. Bookings for this service will open on May 18, with selected flights starting from November. Passengers will be able to pay for a time slot to lie down and rest during their journey.

Each Skynest includes six separate sleeping spaces arranged like bunk beds. Every pod comes with a mattress, clean bedding, a privacy curtain, and a seat belt. There are also reading lights, charging ports, and a small amenity kit for personal use.
Designed for Long Flights
According to the airline, cabin crew will clean and prepare each bed after every session. Sheets, blankets, and pillows will be changed to leave the next customer with a clean space. This helps maintain hygiene and comfort throughout the flight.

Air New Zealand’s Chief Executive, Nikhil Ravishankar, said the pods will allow passengers to stretch out fully and get proper rest in the air. This is especially important for ultra-long-haul flights, where sitting for many hours can be tiring.
Expanding Comfort Options
The airline already offers another feature called the Sky Couch. This allows three economy seats to turn into a flat surface, giving passengers more space to lie down. Other airlines, including United Airlines, are also exploring similar ideas.

Air New Zealand, which first tested the bunk bed concept in September 2023. It is now ready to expand this idea across its new Dreamliner fleet. The first flights with Skynest will include the long route between John F. Kennedy International Airport and Auckland, which takes around 17 hours. Passengers can book a bed for four hours at a time, with each session priced at $495. The airline said the timing is based on sleep research, as a four-hour period allows enough time for passengers to relax and sleep during the journey.
