China Defends Military Policy
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun defended Beijing’s military policy on Friday after Pacific leaders raised concern over China’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile test across the region.
“China is committed to peaceful development and a national defence policy that is defensive in nature. We never engage in military expansion,” he said during a press conference in Beijing.
“China stands ready to work with South Pacific countries to contribute to peace, stability, development and prosperity of the South Pacific region,” he continued.
Pacific Leaders Seek Warning
On Thursday, Pacific Islands Forum leaders called on countries conducting ICBM tests to give at least 24 hours’ advance warning. The statement did not name China, but expressed concern over the recent test, which passed over several Pacific island nations without adequate notice. Seventeen of the forum’s 18 members backed the position, with Nauru dissenting.
The missile landed in international waters close to Tuvalu’s exclusive economic zone, fuelling anger across the region.
Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale called the test “not the act of a friend”, while Tuvalu, Palau and Vanuatu also criticised the launch.
Trade Talks Remain Unclear
Guo was also asked about possible trade announcements during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to the United States later this month, after US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the two countries could unveil measures on agriculture and non-tariff barriers.
The spokesperson did not confirm the plans, saying China had no information to provide on the specific issue. He added that both sides should maintain stable economic and trade relations.
US President Donald Trump has said Xi will visit the United States on September 24, although Beijing has not formally announced the trip.
The planned meeting follows Trump’s trip to Beijing in May, when the two leaders held talks on bilateral ties and trade.
Guo also commented on the arrest and detention of 52 Singaporeans in China’s Guangxi region over suspected pyramid scheme activities and related offences, saying the cases would be handled according to law.
Singapore’s Foreign Ministry said all 52 had received consular assistance, with officials from its embassy in Beijing and consulate-general in Guangzhou making three visits to the detainees.
Singapore’s foreign ministry and police are seeking further information from Chinese authorities, whose investigations are ongoing.
