An 11-year-old schoolgirl in Kedah has died months after allegedly taking part in a school running trial despite having a serious heart condition.

Nur Qaira Alisha Ahmad ‘Ilwan, a Standard Four student at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Pak Kiau, died on August 26 after her health reportedly deteriorated following the incident in April. Her death has since prompted further investigation by Malaysia’s Education Ministry, while the teacher allegedly involved has been temporarily transferred to another school.

The incident reportedly happened on April 14 during an 80-meter running trial held as part of the school’s sports house selection. According to Nur Qaira’s family, the school had already received a medical confirmation letter about her heart condition, and she was supposed to be exempted from sports activities.

Despite this, her father alleged that she was still directed to take part in the running activity.

She Had A Heart Condition Since Childhood

Nur Qaira had reportedly been living with heart problems since she was just three months old. Her father said she had suffered from heart failure and an enlarged heart but remained an active and hardworking student.

After the sports activity, the family said her health began to worsen. She reportedly received treatment from April 17 and later stopped attending school for several months.

She was admitted to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital on April 24 after experiencing severe vomiting and swelling around her eyes. Her condition later became more serious, with her family saying she eventually became bedridden and needed oxygen support.

Nur Qaira died on August 26 at around 7:49pm.

Her Father Shares Emotional Facebook Post

Following her death, Nur Qaira’s father shared an emotional post on Facebook detailing his daughter’s medical history and what he believed had happened.

He said Nur Qaira had been diagnosed with heart failure and an enlarged heart from a young age. Despite her condition, he described her as someone who was active, hardworking, and determined in school.

Her father also accused a teacher from the school’s Special Education Integrated Programme, known as PPKI, of directing his daughter to take part in the sports activity despite a medical confirmation letter being submitted.

In his post, he expressed anger towards the teacher and questioned why his daughter had been allowed to participate despite her medical condition.

However, the father’s claims remain allegations. Authorities have not concluded that the teacher’s actions caused Nur Qaira’s death, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Teacher Transferred As Investigation Continues

The Kedah Education Department has confirmed that the teacher allegedly linked to the case was transferred to another school.

The department described the move as an early intervention measure while investigations continue. It is not a final finding of wrongdoing or a disciplinary decision.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek has instructed the Education Ministry’s Integrity Unit to conduct further investigation into the case. The ministry has said the matter will be handled according to existing rules and laws while ensuring fairness to all parties involved.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari has also called for a thorough and transparent investigation. He said action should be taken if the investigation establishes negligence, misconduct, or breaches of regulations.

Officials Visit Her Family

The latest development came when Kedah Education Department director Azhari Abdul Rashid and Education Minister’s special officer Hasnizam Zakaria visited Nur Qaira’s family.

The Kedah Education Department said the visit was intended to show support and concern for the family following the child’s death. Officials also conveyed their condolences and offered prayers for Nur Qaira.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the case now referred to the Education Ministry’s Integrity Unit for further action. Authorities have yet to establish whether any negligence, misconduct, or breach of regulations occurred during the sports trial.

The teacher’s transfer remains an interim measure, while the Education Ministry’s Integrity Unit continues examining the case.
