Sinabung Erupts In Indonesia
Mount Sinabung in Indonesia’s North Sumatra sent thick ash columns into the sky on Monday after its latest eruption.
Footage shows ash pouring from the volcano’s craters, as authorities monitor the activity from a distance. Vehicles across parts of Karo Regency can be seen coated in volcanic ash, while locals cover their faces.
Panca Praygia Perangin Angin, an officer at the Mount Sinabung Volcano Observatory, said Sinabung’s activity began at around 10:17 local time, with ash columns reaching as high as 3,500 metres.
“Potential risks to the public include respiratory problems caused by exposure to the ash, so wearing face masks is strongly advised,” he added.
Ashfall Covers Karo Regency
Residents affected by the ashfall are also calling for government assistance.
“The ash fallout from this eruption is quite thick; you can see cars and motorcycles covered in volcanic ash. I hope this eruption ends swiftly and that our community receives the help we need,” a local remarked.
Authorities raised the volcano’s status from Level II to Level III at 12:30 pm local time and imposed a three-kilometre exclusion zone around the summit, with a wider six-kilometre restricted sector to the south-southeast.
Authorities Warn Bigger Eruption
Indonesia’s Geological Agency said Monday’s eruption was an initial event and warned that a larger eruption could follow.
Officials have urged residents and visitors to follow safety instructions and stay out of restricted areas.
