Hall of Fame Induction
Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer was officially inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, on Saturday, taking his place alongside the sport’s greatest players. Footage shows Federer taking to the stage after an introduction from his wife Mirka, before delivering a speech packed with emotion, humour and gratitude.
Humour and Emotional Gratitude
“Between 1998 when I first went on the ATP tour, and when I retired in 2022, I wore more than 5,000 headbands in my career,” Federer quipped, referring to what it really took to become an inductee to the HOF, instead of all other records. “That’s more than [Bjorn] Borg and [John] McEnroe combined.”
Beyond the jokes, Federer repeatedly fought back tears as he thanked his family, coaches, ball boys and others who shared his journey through the sport. “They call this the Hall of Fame, but fame was never the goal. My goal was to spend my life doing something I love, like what Mirka said, with people who I love, [who love] it as much as I do,” he said.
Legacy and Advice Forward
“There’s a lot of pressure in tennis. A volcano of pressure, volcano of emotions. And when the match was over, win or lose, you probably saw what I was feeling inside. What can I say? Tennis meant the world to me,” the 45-year-old added. Looking to the next generation, Federer urged young players to ‘keep the camaraderie’ and ‘stay true to their authentic selves’, as they chase their own place in tennis history.
Federer turned professional in 1998 and retired in 2022 after winning 20 Grand Slam singles titles and 103 ATP Tour titles. He spent 310 weeks as world No. 1, including a record 237 consecutive weeks, and became the first man to win 20 major singles titles.
