Displaced Families Face Hunger
Displaced families sheltering in camps in El Obeid, in Sudan’s North Kordofan state, are struggling with severe shortages of food, water and other basic necessities as the conflict forces more people from their homes.
Footage shows tattered tents pitched on sand. Basic cooking pots and blankets can be seen in the makeshift shelters, while other families sit beneath plastic sheeting tied to tree trunks and branches.
Displaced resident Bakhita Ibrahim described an uncertain daily struggle, saying water supplies come and go.
“We cook outside under the intense heat. We live day to day: some days we eat, some days we do not,” she added, saying children “burst into tears asking for food and water.”
Another displaced resident, Saeeda Abdelgadir, said the food and medical aid reaching families was ‘not enough’, and that they needed a ‘food basket’ sufficient to feed their children.
Aid Fails To Meet Needs
She added that they had fled their homes with nothing except “the clothes they were wearing”.
“What we left behind was not much, but we left in a hurry and could not bring it. We ask God to compensate us,” she continued.
The International Organisation for Migration said in July that escalating violence in Kordofan had driven a sharp surge in displacement. More than 219,000 people had been displaced since fighting intensified in October 2025, up 65 percent from more than 132,000 recorded in February.
IOM describes Sudan as the world’s largest displacement crisis. Internal displacement peaked at more than 11.5 million people in January 2025.
Sudan’s Hunger Crisis Deepens
Sudan is also gripped by one of the world’s worst hunger crises. UN agencies said in May that nearly 19.5 million people, around two in every five Sudanese, were facing crisis levels of acute food insecurity or worse. A June FAO-WFP assessment ranked Sudan among the world’s most critical hunger hotspots.
Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces erupted in April 2023, killing and wounding tens of thousands and forcing millions from their homes. The conflict has devastated communities across the country, leaving civilians battling displacement, hunger and dwindling access to essential services.
