First Arctic Route Arrival

The first ship from China’s New New Shipping Line company arrived at the Murmansk Commercial Seaport – marking the first-ever direct arrival of container imports via the Northern Sea Route – on Wednesday night.

Footage shows the vessel, carrying 500 containers of car parts, docking at the port and being unloaded.

“For the Murmansk Commercial Seaport, this is the first time it has handled containerised cargo delivered via this route,” the port’s press office revealed. “The port is adapting to changing logistics: alongside traditional cargo, we are developing new routes and expanding opportunities for shippers.”

China-Russia Shipping Milestone

Murmansk region Governor Andrei Chibis noted that the landmark event would further promote the Northern Sea Route and help develop the city as a transport hub.

Northern Route Expands

The Northern Sea Route is a 5,600-kilometre-long shipping corridor through the waters of the Arctic and the shortest water route between the western part of Eurasia and the Asia-Pacific region.

It is located in the territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone of Russia and is an alternative to the Suez Canal.
