Trump Confirms Ship Relief
US President Donald Trump has confirmed the USS Abraham Lincoln is being relieved after more than eight months at sea, as reports of difficult conditions aboard the aircraft carrier fuel concern over the strain on its crew.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Friday, Trump dismissed concerns over conditions aboard, as well as suggestions that the deployment has lasted too long.
“That ship is moving we know that now. That ship is moving right now or very shortly. And it’s being replaced with another very similar ship,” he said, when questioned by a reporter over concerns of servicepeople’s relatives over the welfare of sailors.
He also added that the deployment had gone on for “not nearly long enough.”
Long Deployment Raises Concerns
The Lincoln left San Diego in November 2025 and has now been deployed for more than 260 days.
Reports suggest the Pentagon is sending the USS George Washington to the Middle East to replace the Lincoln, which has been supporting US military operations against Iran.
Families Report Harsh Conditions
Relatives of sailors have reportedly described shortages of food and basic supplies, broken toilets, mould in washing facilities and mounting exhaustion during the extended deployment.
Families have also raised concerns about sailors’ mental health, with reports of multiple attempts by crew members to go overboard.
The US Navy has said it has seen no increase in suicidal ideation aboard the Lincoln.
