Ice Drinks Offer A Cool Escape

Residents of Seoul found an icy escape from the summer heat on Tuesday, sipping drinks from glasses carved entirely from ice.

The Ice Art Cafe in Yeonnam-dong combines cold drinks with hands-on ice carving, letting visitors create their own frozen designs and explore a refrigerated ice room amid historic, record-breaking summer heatwave.

Footage shows the cafe owner, Kim Gwang-sung, carving ice glasses by hand as visitors sip drinks from the frozen cups and try their hand at ice carving.

“People are always amazed. They’re surprised that the cups are actually made of ice,” said Kim, who has worked as an ice sculptor for 25 years.

“It’s extremely hot these days, and I think summers will only get hotter in the years ahead. So I believe ice sculpting and the ice art industry have a promising future,” he added.

South Korea has been gripped by an intense heatwave this summer, with temperatures reaching record levels in parts of the country and Seoul coming close to its historic high.
