Ferry Fire Incident
More than 100 people were rescued after the passenger ferry KMP Putri Yasmin caught fire in the Lombok Strait early Wednesday while sailing from Bali to Lombok.
Footage shows rescuers pulling passengers aboard another vessel before bringing them back to land.
“We received a report that a ferry caught fire in the waters around the Lombok Strait. We then immediately prepared for evacuation using our vessel to head to the location,” a Search and Rescue Agency spokesperson said.
Successful Sea Evacuation
“We successfully evacuated a total of 30 people to the Padang Bay area, our other team successfully evacuated 59 people, and furthermore, the Indonesian Navy ship successfully evacuated 17 passengers, who are now being brought to the port,” he added.
The fire broke out at about 04:15 local time as the ferry travelled from Padangbai port in Bali to Lembar port in Lombok, according to the Mataram Search and Rescue Office.
Rescue Operation Continues
The passenger manifest listed 114 passengers and 17 crew members on board, along with 44 vehicles and 53 motorcycles. Rescue teams, Indonesian Navy vessels and other ships were deployed to the scene.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
