A passenger has been arrested in India after allegedly trying to open the emergency exit door of a Batik Air flight travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi. The incident happened while the aircraft was flying, causing concern among passengers and crew members onboard.
The passenger was identified as Jamsheer Athanikkal, an Indian national from Kootannad in Kerala’s Palakkad district, according to airport officials. He was travelling on Batik Air flight OD231, which departed from Kuala Lumpur and was heading to Kochi on Wednesday.
Emergency Exit Incident Onboard
According to the police report, the incident took place between 9:30 pm and 11:05 pm while the aircraft was still in the air. The passenger allegedly tried to force open the emergency exit and damaged the window panel near the exit area.
Police said the passenger also threatened fellow travellers during the incident, creating a safety risk for people on board. Videos showing the incident later appeared on social media after the aircraft landed safely in Kochi on Thursday.
The footage showed cabin crew members and other passengers stepping in to stop the man from opening the emergency door. Their prompt action averted a more serious situation.
Passenger Taken Into Custody
The passenger was arrested by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) upon the landing of the aircraft in Kochi. He was later handed over to Nedumbassery Police Station for further investigation and legal action.
The case was registered following a complaint filed by Batik Air’s security in charge at Kochi. Police have filed charges against the passenger under several laws related to safety and public security.
Legal Action Begins
Authorities said Jamsheer has been charged under Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation. He also faces charges under Section 11A of the Aircraft Act for violating safety or security directions.
In addition, police booked him under Section 118(e) of the Kerala Police Act for actions that could endanger public safety. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
