TikToker Sparks Debate Over Why Cheating And Modern Dating Are Becoming More Common

A TikToker has started a conversation on the reason why cheating in relationships is increasing, noting that perhaps it is due to the modern dating culture.

Screengrab of video

The video is debating more than just cheating itself. The bigger issue is that dating has changed, and more people are trying to be desired, have options, and are looking for a sense of being desired instead of a relationship.

Looksmaxing and Endless Options

The video also talks about “looksmaxing”, a trend where people try to improve their appearance through things like fitness, grooming and cosmetic treatments.

The argument is that looksmaxing is not always about finding a partner. For some, it is also about looking better, gaining confidence and getting validation from others. According to her, a lot of the attention happens within male communities, where appearance becomes something to compare, rate, and improve. Looking like someone who could attract anyone starts to feel like a measure of status.

Changing Dating Expectations

Dating apps have also influenced the way people think about relationships, she said. There are so many profiles, and with the sense that there may be someone better just a swipe away, commitment can begin to feel like giving up on other options.

The creator wonders if dating in today’s day and age has turned into more of a “safety blanket” for the idea of having endless options, rather than settling for one person and working things out together.

Public reactions to the topic

The video garnered responses from viewers, some of whom commented that the problem is not confined to Singapore.

One commenter wrote, “It’s not just Singapore, it’s the entire world these days except it’s far easier to get caught in Singapore because the country is small and people are more open to reporting it.”

Another said, “Cheating in Singapore is so rampant I barely get surprised when it happens anymore.”
