Although chocolate is a popular food for many people, few are aware of how it starts its journey before appearing on the supermarket shelves. One content creator in Singapore caught the eye for creating an educational video on how things grow naturally on the cacao tree, which happens to be a tree that makes chocolate. The straightforward and instructive video lets people get a better view of the first steps in the process of chocolate creation and clarify the chocolate treat for the world.

The creator went to a cacao tree and brought the audience up to speed on the vibrant pods that ultimately turn into chocolate. Many people think that chocolate is just like a common fruit and grows on a little branch,” she said. Rather, cacao pods develop straight from the trunk and dense branches of the tree. This is a very unique way for the cacao tree to grow, distinguishing it from many fruit trees.
Discovering The Cacao Tree
As the creator was talking in the video, he could see the cacao pods in various stages of development. She demonstrated to them small flowers, immature pods, and mature fruits, explaining the connection between each. The flowers open directly from the trunk of the tree and gradually develop into large pods containing cacao beans.

She also described a botanical term called cauliflory. This natural process is used for flowers and fruit to flower from the main trunk rather than smaller branches. Cacao pods are heavier as they grow, so planting them from the trunk provides more support for their growth.
From Pod to Chocolate
The maker then proceeded to demonstrate the transformation of tiny flowers into colorful cacao pods. In each ripe pod, the cacao beans are encased in soft white pulp. These beans are the main ingredient used to make chocolate.

The cacao beans pass through a number of key stages following harvest. These are fermented, dried, roasted, and gently processed to form the chocolate products that are sold globally. The video covered the early stages in an easily digestible manner for children and adults.
Learning Through Nature
The creator inspired viewers to be more inquisitive about the natural world throughout the video. Using a real cacao tree, she was able to explain the step-by-step process of growing cacao, which many had never witnessed first-hand.

The educational video gave viewers a glimpse at the process of chocolate’s inception before it even made it to the store. The creator explained a few interesting facts about the cacao tree in an easy-to-follow and entertaining manner with up-close demonstrations and made the science behind chocolate fun and easy. Her presentation showed that there is an interesting story in foods we eat every day.
