The animal appeared relaxed as it walked across an open area between parked vehicles. People nearby watched from a distance while recording the incident. The capybara was not aggressive and moved slowly, without disturbing traffic.
Animal Seen Crossing Road
The escape happened in Selayang, a town in the state of Selangor. In the video, the capybara walked across the road before heading towards another part of the neighbourhood. Drivers slowed their vehicles to avoid the animal, while several people watched from nearby buildings.
Capybaras are South American and the world’s largest rodents. They have a calm temperament and usually live near rivers, lakes, and wetlands. In recent years, some people have kept capybaras as exotic pets where local laws allow, although ownership is usually subject to regulations.
Authorities Expected To Investigate
It is not yet clear where the capybara came from or how it escaped. However, officials have not announced whether the animal belonged to a private owner, a licensed wildlife facility, or another location. Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the escape.
If the capybara is discovered, authorities will try to find it and bring it back to safety. Meanwhile, animal welfare officers advise the public to keep a safe distance from escaped animals. They also urge people not to catch the animals because doing so could cause unnecessary stress or injury.
Rare Sighting Draws Attention
Capybaras, which are rarely sighted locally in Malaysian neighbourhoods, made the unusual sighting for locals.
