UN Session Erupts In Tensions

A United Nations session descended into a shouting match on Friday after Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, called on UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Pramila Patten to resign.

Danon accused Patten of bowing to political pressure over a UN report that placed Israeli security forces on a list of parties suspected of patterns of conflict-related sexual violence.

“Why did you not come to see the evidence yourself? Were you afraid the facts would not match the conclusion?” he said. “You caved. You caved to the pressure. You caved to the Secretary General’s obsession with targeting Israel.”

Heated Exchange During Meeting

The speech was interrupted by Vanessa Frazier, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict.

“This should not be personal. I have a point of order,” Frazier said.

Danon replied, “No, you will be quiet because I’m speaking now,” before demanding that Frazier leave the session.

“I will not walk out. We have verified evidence,” she responded, accusing Danon of launching ‘personal attacks’.

Danon fired back: ‘You work for the UN, and you will respect the rules of the UN. We are a member state, and you work for the UN, and you will be quiet now <…> If you don’t want to listen, go out.”

Danon Calls For Resignation

Returning to his prepared remarks, Danon accused Patten of helping spread ‘a dangerous lie’.

“First, they accused Israel of starvation. Then, genocide. Now, rape. Rape!” he said. “You had a choice. You could have said no. You could have resigned. You failed to do it then, but you should resign now.”

UN Report Sparks Dispute

The clash followed the publication of a UN report on conflict-related sexual violence, which added Israeli armed and security forces to a UN monitoring list over allegations involving Palestinian detainees. The report also included Hamas and other armed groups.

Israel has rejected the findings, while UN officials say the conclusions are based on verified information gathered through established UN reporting mechanisms.
