A family trip that began with joy ended in tragedy after six relatives died in a road accident involving their newly purchased Proton X50 and a lorry in Penang, Malaysia, on Sunday, 7 June.

The family had collected the new sport utility vehicle from a sales center in Juru, Penang, at about 11 am. Excited about the purchase, they took photographs beside the vehicle before starting their journey. According to reports, they were traveling to visit and clean the grave of their late father when the accident occurred.
Deadly Collision on the Road
The crash happened in Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal when the Proton X50 reportedly lost control and collided with an oncoming lorry. The driver, 27-year-old Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Shukri, was among those killed in the collision.

His younger brother, Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri, aged 21, and others, Nora Mhd Husin, aged 55, Jamaliah Sannusi, aged 27, a seven-year-old child, and a six-month-old baby, were also killed. A three-year-old child was the only survivor and suffered serious injuries. The child was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Officials later sent the victims’ bodies to the Forensic Department at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar for further examination.
Rescue Teams Respond Quickly
The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 3.46pm. Firefighters from the Tikam Batu and Sungai Petani stations arrived at the scene within minutes.
Rescue workers used hydraulic equipment to remove the victims from the badly damaged vehicle. Witnesses at the scene suggested that the driver may have briefly fallen asleep before the crash, causing the vehicle to cross into the opposite lane. However, authorities have not confirmed the exact cause of the accident.
Investigation Continues
Kedah Police Chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the 47-year-old lorry driver was not speeding and tested negative for drugs and alcohol. Police also confirmed that the lorry was traveling at around 60 km/h, which was within the speed limit for the road.

Although background checks found that the lorry driver had seven previous traffic summonses, four remain unpaid. Police continue to detain the driver while they investigate the case. Authorities are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving that caused death.
Police also revealed that Ahmad Syafiq had served with the Royal Malaysia Police for about six years and had transferred from Sabah to Penang around a year ago. The investigation remains ongoing.
