Thailand could tighten its approach to drug offences, with a senior legislator proposing prison sentences for repeat drug users instead of rehabilitation.
House of Representatives President Sophon Saram said the country’s drug laws should be revised so that individuals who return to drug use after rehabilitation face imprisonment.
Current Approach Treats Users As Patients
Thailand’s drug policy has shifted significantly in recent years.
The Narcotics Law of 2021 says drug users are treated mainly as patients, focusing on rehab and medical treatment instead of prosecution, with officials saying rehab is a more sustainable solution to addiction since prison alone often fails to stop relapse.
Those found carrying small quantities of illegal drugs for personal use are encouraged to undergo treatment at rehabilitation centers or hospitals. Individuals who voluntarily enter rehabilitation programs are not charged with drug use or possession.
Calls For Tougher Penalties
Speaking after a visit to Khu Mueang Hospital in Buriram, one of Thailand’s state-run rehabilitation centres, Sophon said many drug users repeatedly returned for treatment after resuming drug use.
He argued that stricter legal measures are needed to discourage repeat offences.
According to Sophon, individuals who return to drug use after rehabilitation should face prison sentences rather than another round of treatment.
Drug Laws May Be Reviewed
Sophon also announced plans to bring together agencies involved in drug enforcement, treatment, and rehabilitation for discussions in Parliament.
The discussions will focus on Thailand’s drug problem and possible changes to existing laws.
No date for the discussions has been announced so far.
