A monkey was recently spotted climbing near a streetlight in Malaysia while appearing to snack on insects gathered around the bright light. The bizarre late-night shot was videotaped and was soon picked up by others online.

The short video clip demonstrated that the monkey was moving carefully along a fence, near the streetlight, and then further toward the streetlight. As insects circled around the light, the animal appeared to catch and eat them while balancing near the pole. The incident reportedly happened in a residential area during the night.
Monkey Seen Near Homes
Residents living nearby said monkeys are sometimes seen entering neighborhoods searching for food. However, many people were surprised to see one using the streetlight area to hunt insects instead of looking through rubbish bins or fruit trees.

Monkeys are extremely adaptable creatures and can easily acquire new feeding patterns when they are in close proximity to humans, wildlife experts explained. Insects can prey on animals when they go to the lights; they may emit bright light that allows them to locate the animals.
The video also showed the monkey moving calmly without appearing aggressive toward people nearby. There was no damage or injury reported in the incident.
Wildlife Activity Increasing
In several parts of Malaysia, wildlife sightings inside residential communities have become more common in recent years. Loss of natural habitats due to urban sprawl and deforestation has led to animals encroaching on town and residential areas.
Some residents have been previously warned by local authorities to not feed wild monkeys, as frequent feeding may attract them. Officials also warned that close interaction with wild animals can sometimes create safety concerns for both humans and wildlife.

Some residents said monkeys are often seen near drains, rooftops, gardens, and electric poles, especially during quieter hours of the evening. Wildlife officers continue monitoring areas where animal sightings happen regularly.
Authorities Urge Public Caution
Animal experts said monkeys usually search for food wherever it is available, especially in places with strong lighting or uncovered waste. They added that unusual feeding behavior does not always mean the animal is dangerous or sick.
Authorities encouraged the public to avoid approaching or disturbing wild monkeys if spotted inside residential areas. People were also advised to keep food properly covered and report aggressive animal behavior to wildlife officers.
The video ended with the monkey climbing away from the streetlight and disappearing into nearby trees as the insects continued circling the bright lamp.
