A late-night putu mayam stall in Johor Bahru has gone viral after a simple food review video turned into something more emotional – blending grief, memory, and a street snack many say they rarely see anymore.

In the video, an elderly uncle was seen preparing fresh putu mayam at a small roadside setup in Bandar Baru Uda. While explaining flavours like original, pandan, and putu bambu, the conversation shifted when he mentioned he now only operates at night.

The uncle then shared that his only son, Muhammad, passed away last December due to a heart condition.

“Now it’s just me,” he said.

He explained he used to run the stall with his son, and since his passing, things have felt “messed up.” Even so, he continues operating the stall, with his wife helping behind the scenes, calmly serving customers and explaining how to store the food.

A Snack People Grew Up With, Now A Rare Street Sight

Putu mayam carries a quiet nostalgia, a childhood street snack once commonly seen at neighbourhood stalls and pushcarts across Singapore.

The soft rice noodle strands, topped with grated coconut and palm sugar, were once a familiar part of everyday life, picked up during morning walks or late afternoon cravings, often without much thought.

Today, it is something many remember more than they regularly see. It still exists in pockets like Johor Bahru, where a few older stalls continue preparing it the traditional way, one order at a time.

Comments Quickly Turn Supportive

The clip quickly drew warm reactions online, with viewers encouraging others in Johor Bahru to support the stall.

Some shared they had bought from him before and described him as kind and generous. Others said the moment hit differently because it showed how everyday stalls often carry quiet, unseen stories behind them.

In the end, it is a simple clip, but one that left many thinking about food, memory, and the people still holding onto both.
