Cat ‘mums’ gathered in Singapore on Sunday as a Mother’s Day event was held at One Holland Village, offering activities for owners and their pets, including access to the country’s first dedicated cat park.
Footage shows crowds of cat owners attending the event. Visitors are seen playing with their pets and moving between stalls.
The event was organised by Buddy Bites, a pet food subscription company which said it expanded beyond its core business to create a dedicated community space for cat owners.
The company said it spearheaded the initiative to address a gap in cat-focused public spaces in Singapore, amid growing demand for locations where cat owners can socialise while allowing their pets to interact safely.
“Whenever we do host an event like this, we’ll make sure we have one of the NGOs we work with. In this case, we have the SPCA. I think it’s great for raising some money. We usually will take a portion of revenue and donate it back to shelters, and also, it’s great for awareness,” said the Founder of Buddy Bites, Ryan Black.
“I think it’s important for people to see as they’re looking to add pets to their lives and the availability of great cats, great dogs within the welfare organisations in Singapore, and I think it’s important to just show the great work that they do,” he added.
It comes amid a rise in pet ownership in Singapore. The space was designed specifically for cats to socialise safely outdoors, in contrast to the city’s more established dog-focused parks.
In recent years, animal welfare groups in the city-state have continued to promote adoption drives and call for more pet-friendly community infrastructure in high-density urban areas.
