The streets of Mukah came alive this week with the sounds of drums and the sight of colorful costumes. The 2026 Pesta Kaul Mukah Cultural Parade hosted a special performance that captured the hearts of everyone watching. A group of performers showed the beauty of tradition through a lively and energetic lion dance.

The performance was a collaboration between the Mukah Chinese Association and the Medan Setia Raja Lion Dance Club. This partnership brought together different parts of the community to celebrate Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage. Many people gathered along the road to watch the talented dancers and musicians perform in the bright daylight.

A Powerful Display of Tradition

The highlight of the parade was the rhythmic drumming that guided the lion dancers. A young female drummer, wearing a traditional headscarf, led the performance with great skill. Her fast and precise movements on the large drum created a powerful beat. This beat gave energy to the two red and yellow lions as they moved through the crowd.

The lions danced with great expression, jumping and bowing to the audience. Their bright colors stood out against the gray pavement, making the scene look like a moving painting. The performers used heavy lion heads and long silk bodies to mimic the movements of a real animal. This ancient art form is often performed to bring good luck and drive away negative energy.

Strengthening Community Bonds

Pesta Kaul is an important festival for the Melanau people, but the inclusion of the lion dance shows how diverse the celebration has become. By sharing their traditions, the Chinese community in Mukah added a unique layer to the event. Local leaders praised the performers for their hard work and for keeping these traditions alive for younger generations.

Visitors from other parts of Malaysia and international tourists enjoyed the show. Many took photos and videos to remember the special moment. The parade lasted for several hours, featuring many different ethnic groups, but the lion dance remained one of the most talked-about moments of the day.

The event was a success, showing that culture can bring people together in a peaceful and happy way. As the parade ended, the performers received loud applause from the crowd, marking another successful year for the Pesta Kaul Mukah.
