Singapore football is about to welcome one of Asia’s biggest names.

Former Japan international and ex-AC Milan star Keisuke Honda is set to play in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) next season. This comes after his signing with FC Jurong, in one of the league’s most high-profile moves in recent years.

The 39-year-old attacking midfielder will link up with the club in August for the 2026/27 campaign. This is following Albirex Niigata Singapore’s rebrand to FC Jurong. The move has already sparked excitement among local football fans, many of whom have spotted Honda at domestic matches in recent months.

A World Cup Icon Arrives in Singapore

Honda needs little introduction in Asian football. He represented Japan at three consecutive FIFA World Cups — 2010, 2014 and 2018. He made history by becoming the first Asian player to both score and assist in three straight editions of the tournament.

Across his international career, Honda earned 98 caps and scored 38 goals for Japan, cementing his place as one of the country’s modern greats. At club level, his career has taken him across the world.

From Japan’s Nagoya Grampus to the Netherlands with VVV-Venlo, Russia with CSKA Moscow, and Italy’s Serie A with AC Milan, Honda has built a football journey few players can match.

He later had spells in Mexico, Australia, Brazil, Azerbaijan, Lithuania and most recently Bhutan’s Paro FC. There, he briefly returned to competitive football in 2024 and scored twice in two appearances.

Not a Surprise to Local Football Watchers

For many in Singapore’s football circle, the announcement may not have come completely out of nowhere.

Honda has reportedly been living in Singapore and has been seen regularly at local SPL fixtures. He was also previously spotted training with Albirex Niigata’s first team, fuelling speculation that a move could be on the cards.

That speculation has now become reality. FC Jurong described the signing as part of a broader long-term vision as the club transitions from Albirex Niigata Singapore into a new era under its Jurong identity.

Club chairman Daisuke Korenaga called Honda the “cornerstone” of a project aimed at building a lasting football legacy in Singapore.

More than Just a Marquee Signing

Honda himself has made it clear that this is not simply a publicity move. In his first statement after signing, he said his main objective is to win the league title, while also pursuing personal milestones, including setting a record for scoring in the top leagues of the most countries.

For the SPL, his arrival could be a major boost in profile. A player with World Cup pedigree, global recognition and a history at Europe’s elite clubs brings a level of attention rarely seen in the local league. Fans online have already begun calling it a “huge win” for Singapore football, with many hoping the move can draw larger crowds and greater interest in the domestic game.

Honda Recently Made Headlines Over Iran World Cup Comments

Away from Singapore football, Honda was also recently in the spotlight for speaking out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup controversy involving Iran.

The Japanese legend publicly said he hoped Iran would still be allowed to participate in the tournament, despite uncertainty. Writing on X, Honda said he personally wanted Iran to feature at the World Cup, calling it a sensitive issue.

A day later, he revealed that a United States-based sponsor had allegedly paused an advertising deal following his remarks. According to Honda, the agreement, which was reportedly close to being finalised ahead of the World Cup, was put on hold after his statement supporting Iran’s participation.

He later criticised the decision, saying that regarding companies that “ignore the essence” and make such calls, he was “better off without them.” The comments quickly drew international attention and added yet another chapter to Honda’s already colourful public life.

Honda, 39, has nearly 100 caps for Japan and played in 3 World Cups. Not a huge surprise locally – he’s been living in Singapore, attending games, and even training with Albirex. #sgsports #sgnews #keisukehonda
