Losing your phone can feel like the end of the world, and having it get stolen when you are most vulnerable can make your heart sink into an abyss.
Such was the case for Singaporean musician Dominic Chin, whose phone went missing after an eventful Friday night out when he was on a ride back home.

On his instagram, the Singaporean singer-songwriter shared how an unexpected dating app notification helped him track down his missing phone after a night out, in what turned into an unlikely digital chase with a happy ending.
Recounting the incident in a candid story, Chin said he had left his phone behind in a ride on Friday night after being heavily intoxicated. By Saturday morning, the phone was nowhere to be found.

After contacting the ride hailing platform, he was told that the driver had checked the vehicle but did not find the device. Still, Chin was not convinced.

Using the ‘Find My iPhone’ feature on his iPad and computer, he managed to trace the phone’s location to a specific address. And determined to retrieve it himself, he headed down after work on Saturday with a friend.
Search Leads to Dead Ends
Armed with his Apple Watch and the phone’s location data, Chin spent nearly an hour searching the area. The tagged location appeared to cover a car park, a hawker centre, and several nearby shops.

He and his friend walked from cab to cab, repeatedly triggering the sound alert feature in hopes of hearing the phone ring. Despite checking multiple parked taxis and combing through the vicinity, they could not hear a single sound.

The search quickly turned frustrating. After walking around for some time, Chin eventually decided to stop for dinner at the hawker centre where, eventually, the breakthrough came.
Dating App Alert Changes Everything
Just as he sat down with his meal, Chin received a notification from dating app Hinge.
Someone had replied to him, and the alert immediately caught his attention. For the notification to appear, his phone had to be nearby and connected.

That was when he realised the missing device could not be far away. Using his Apple Watch again, he checked the directional locator, which showed that the phone was approximately six metres away. This time, the signal pointed directly towards a shop in front of him.

Following the direction shown on the watch, Chin approached the store and asked if anyone had found a phone. According to him, the response initially felt suspicious. He then explained that his Apple Watch was actively pointing to their direction.

Moments later, a staff member reportedly took the phone out from underneath a cupboard and handed it back to him, claiming that somebody had dropped it.
Comments
One user asked the musician if he thanked the Hinge user whose message showed up in his watch.

Another expressed relief that he found his phone.

And as one commenter put it, it was quite the eventful weekend for the musician.

The Credit
The Singapore musician ended the story on a note of relief, adding simply:
“Oh, I miss my phone.”
