Strong Public Reaction
Former England striker Gary Lineker strongly criticized Sir Jim Ratcliffe after the Manchester United co-owner described Britain as being “colonized” by immigrants. Ratcliffe made the remarks during an interview with Sky News while discussing the UK economy.

His words quickly sparked anger across the country. Many people felt the language was too extreme and unfair. The discussion then shifted out of football and into the national politics and developed a significant societal debate on immigration and responsibility.
Apology and Backlash
Ratcliffe made a partial apology after receiving considerable criticism. He said he felt sorry if his words offended people in the UK and Europe. However, he also explained that he wanted to highlight the need for controlled immigration that supports economic growth. According to a video published by Sky News, Ratcliffe insisted that governments must balance migration with jobs, skills, and investment. Still, political leaders were not satisfied. Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly asked him to apologize properly. The Office for National Statistics, known as the ONS, also corrected Ratcliffe’s population claims. ONS data shows the UK population reached around 70 million in mid-2024, not the numbers he suggested.
Lineker’s Sharp Criticism
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker did not hide his feelings. According to a video clip from the podcast shared online, he called Ratcliffe’s comments hypocritical. Lineker pointed out that Ratcliffe lives in Monaco, which is famous for low taxes. He questioned how someone living abroad could criticize migrants who move to Britain for work.

Lineker also said many migrants pay taxes and contribute strongly to society. He added that Manchester United has many international players, which makes the comments even more surprising. His words quickly spread across social media and sports platforms.
Political and Football Impact
The controversy did not stop there. The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, also criticized Ratcliffe’s language. Some Manchester United supporters’ groups expressed disappointment as well. Meanwhile, the Football Association confirmed that its legal team is reviewing the situation. Chief executive Mark Bullingham said the department will decide if a formal investigation is necessary. This move shows how seriously the football authorities view public statements made by club owners.
Ongoing National Debate
This situation has grown into a wider national debate about immigration, leadership, and public responsibility. One of the richest businessmen in Britain, Ratcliffe is also a valuable presence at Manchester United. Lineker still talks a lot about politics and other social matters, something that attracts a lot of responses.

The narrative focuses on the fact that remarks used in economic debates are able to influence football, politics, and the opinion of the people simultaneously. For now, many people are waiting to see whether further action will follow.
