On 10 February, a masked gang carried out a bold heist on an Italian highway. Around six thieves, dressed in black and white outfits, stopped a Battistolli security van in Puglia. The criminals used explosives to blow up the armored van in broad daylight. Smoke and debris filled the air as the thieves rushed to take the cash. According to a video, this dramatic robbery reminded many people of scenes from the classic 1969 film The Italian Job.
Explosion Sparks Traffic Chao
Before the explosion, the gang parked cars across the highway and set another vehicle on fire. This blocked traffic and allowed the robbers to work without interference.
According to sources, the thieves used rifles to defend themselves when police arrived. At least one police officer was injured during the exchange of gunfire. No civilians were hurt, but the highway was filled with smoke, fire, and damaged vehicles.
Robbers Targeted Multiple Vehicles
The gang did not only attack the armored van. They stopped other vehicles on the highway and robbed drivers while chaos unfolded. Italian authorities later reported that only two suspects were arrested in connection with the heist. A 38-year-old and a 62-year-old face charges including attempted murder, armed robbery, and possession of war weapons. Police continue searching for the remaining gang members.
Security Company Speaks Out
The Battistolli Group said this was one of 14 attacks on its vans over the last two years. The company called on authorities to increase security for cash transport.
The company issued a statement saying that it was in solidarity with its colleagues and the population that was impacted by these events. The attack shows that criminals are willing to take extreme risks to steal money.
Video Shows Daring Heist
Footage from the highway shows the armored van exploding and smoke covering the area. The robbers quickly took money from the destroyed vehicle before escaping in multiple cars. According to sources, police chased the gang but only caught two suspects so far.
Responding and Investigating of the Police
As the Italian policemen reacted promptly, the gangsters had heavy armaments. The authorities termed the incident a bloody incident, referring to the dangers experienced by the law enforcement during the occurrence of such heists.
The police are currently researching the efficiency with which the gang made the explosives and staged the attack.
Impact on the Community
The residents and those driving witnessed the robbery, and fear and traffic issues ensued in the area. Nevertheless, the citizens were not hurt in the disorder. The government has requested motorists to be vigilant when using highways, particularly in the places where the transport vans will ply.
