The Singapore Film Society (SFS) will officially commence operations for SFS Somerset, the society’s new dedicated screening venue for members and non-members, on 1 January 2026.
Located at Hall 6 of Golden Village Cineleisure, SFS Somerset will present a carefully curated programme of films that have limited commercial runs or have yet to be theatrically screened in Singapore.

The launch of SFS Somerset marks a significant milestone for SFS, reinforcing its long standing mission to nurture film appreciation, support filmmakers, and provide audiences with access to diverse cinematic voices in an intimate, community-focused setting.
Opening Film: The Old Man and His Car by Michael Kam (Rating: NC16 – some coarse language)

The inaugural programme at SFS Somerset will feature Singapore’s own The Old Man and His Car (2025), the acclaimed debut feature by Michael Kam. The film follows Hock, a widower preparing to leave Singapore to live with his son in Canada, who must come to terms with letting go of his cherished vintage Mercedes. Through the seemingly simple act of selling his car, Hock confronts memory, loss, and the quiet resilience required to embrace change. The film is a tender meditation on ageing, attachment and human connection.

The Old Man and His Car has received international recognition and was selected for major film festivals including the Tokyo International Film Festival (Asian Future – World Premiere), Golden Horse Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival (Singapore Panorama opening film), and the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. The entire cast and crew were proudly present at the film’s one and only sold-out screening during its Singapore premiere at the recently completed SGIFF in November.
