The Australian government has announced a new initiative that is expected to set an example in the world’s renewable energy system. Under this scheme called “Solar Sharer“, residents of New South Wales, South Australia and southeast Queensland will receive up to three hours of free electricity every day at noon.
The plan will come into effect from July 2026.

Free Midday Electricity Scheme
Solar power is currently being produced extensively in Australia. The once coal-dependent country is now leading the way in generating electricity through solar and wind power.
More than one third of the country’s homes now have solar panels installed. As a result, a huge amount of excess electricity is generated at noon, but it is often wasted, because most people are at work and use is low.

It is in this situation that the government is introducing a new scheme so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of solar power. Even those who do not have solar panels at home.
According to the plan, electricity will be provided completely free between 11 am and 2 pm every day. The government hopes that people will be encouraged to change the timing of washing machines, dishwashers, electric car charging, etc. during this time.

Smart Meters And The Use Of Modern Technology
Households that have smart meters in their homes will initially be able to take advantage of this. Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said, “We now have so much solar power that we want to share it with everyone so that they benefit from renewable energy.”

He added that the scheme would reduce night-time power pressure, as people would use electricity during the day, when it comes from renewable sources.
Economic Impact And Controversy
The government believes that the scheme will reduce pressure on the electricity grid and also reduce costs. Using cheaper midday power will reduce evening demand, which will reduce costs for electricity suppliers.
However, some experts say that lower prices at one time of day could lead to higher prices at other times.

“On the one hand, prices can go down on the other,” says energy principal consultant Marc White. However, according to Bowen, “the more people take up the benefit, the more overall costs will be reduced.”
Future plans and expansion:
Although initially launched in three states, there are plans to expand the scheme across the country by 2027.
Experts believe that the popularity of this initiative will force other states to join it.
