A couple in Bangsar has been arrested by police on suspicion of cultivating cannabis plants in their rented condominium unit. The arrests were made following a raid conducted by the Kuala Lumpur Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, during which officers discovered two suspected ganja plants and a quantity of dried cannabis leaves.

According to Brickfields district police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook, the Kuala Lumpur Narcotics Crime Investigation Department conducted the raid at about 11.30pm on 6 November. Officers found two suspected ganja plants and 27 grams of dried cannabis worth approximately RM1,210 (around S$378).
Ganja Grown After YouTube Lesson
“The man rented the condominium nearly a year ago and was living there with his girlfriend. The plants were grown about seven weeks ago after he learned how to do it from YouTube,” Hoo said in a statement on Friday.

The 48-year-old male suspect tested positive for THC and has a previous record related to a similar drug offence. His 40-year-old girlfriend tested negative for drugs. Both are currently unemployed.
Charged Under Dangerous Drugs Act
Police also seized two mobile phones and several pieces of jewellery, including three necklaces, four pendants, and two rings.

Both suspects have been remanded for further investigation under Section 6B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. These cover the cultivation and use of cannabis respectively.
If convicted, the pair could face mandatory imprisonment.
Not the First Case of Its Kind
This isn’t the first time Malaysian authorities have encountered a couple growing cannabis at home.

In 2020, a man and woman were arrested in Kampung Paya Mebi, Kuching, after police found an 8cm-tall cannabis plant in their house. The male suspect in that case also tested positive for multiple drugs, including THC, and had two prior criminal records under the Dangerous Drugs Act.
The latest Bangsar case adds to growing concerns over individuals experimenting with illegal cultivation, seemingly encouraged by online tutorials that blur the lines between curiosity and crime.
