A Shocking Scene in Morning Traffic

A quiet Tuesday morning in Bangkok turned into horror when a 21-year-old man set himself on fire at a bus stop before running into traffic along Phahon Yothin Road in Chatuchak on September 30.

The incident took place around 10am, outside the Land Development Department office, near Sena Nikhom BTS Station. Surveillance footage showed the man standing behind the bus stop, holding a large yellow container believed to contain petrol.

Moments later, he poured the liquid over himself and lit his body on fire.

Two university students waiting nearby were left in shock as the man, completely engulfed in flames, ran out onto the road before collapsing, according to Thai media.

Witnesses Tried to Save Him

The sudden fire caused chaos among motorists. One motorcyclist fell and was injured after colliding with the burning man. A witness, Miang, recalled turning around and seeing the man ablaze, saying, “I turned and saw him on fire, screaming.”

Another witness, a security guard, identified as Wee, 47, said he saw the flames from across the street and ran over with a fire extinguisher.

“When I sprayed him with the extinguisher, he was still alive and moving, but his body was covered in burns and his clothes were almost gone,” Wee said.

A Heated Phone Call Before the Fire

According to police, the man had a heated phone conversation moments before the act. His mother later told investigators that her son had been struggling with relationship problems with his girlfriend in the days leading up to the incident.

An almost-empty six-litre fuel container and a yellow lighter were found beside the bus stop. Emergency responders rushed the man to the hospital while he was unconscious but still breathing.

As of the latest updates, he remains in critical condition. Police are still investigating, but early reports point to emotional distress and relationship troubles as possible triggers.

Authorities Urge Compassion and Awareness

While the man’s identity has not been made public, Thai authorities have urged the public not to share graphic videos of the incident out of respect for the victim and his family.

Police say they will speak to the man once his condition stabilises.
