On 30 July, after weeks of uncertainty, Safe Animal Shelter in Balik Pulau, Penang, finally moved into a new home. The relocation marked a bittersweet milestone for founder Anthony and his small team of volunteers and staff.

Forced to vacate their previous premises after the landowner reclaimed the property, the shelter had just two months to find a safe haven for its animals.
The situation was made even more challenging by Anthony’s ongoing heart condition, which prevents him from doing heavy physical work, and the shelter’s already strained finances.

Despite the odds, volunteers rallied together to help move the dogs and cats to their new location — a modest but secure place where the animals can finally be free from the dangers they once faced.
Where the Forgotten Wait
Many of the shelter’s dogs have been abandoned by their owners. Staff have shared heartbreaking stories of animals left behind with empty promises of return.
“Some of these dogs wait by the gate, day after day, hoping to see their owners again,” staff member Shanti said.
“Weeks turn into months, and they don’t understand why no one comes back. These are living souls — not things to be discarded.”
Founded in 2022, Safe Animal Shelter provides a home-like environment for animals who have endured neglect, abuse, or life on the streets. For many, it happens to be the first time they experience kindness and stability.
A Heavy Financial Burden
Running the shelter costs nearly RM15,000 a month — covering rent, salaries for two helpers, food, and utilities. This figure does not include medical expenses, which can be substantial.
With the added costs of rebuilding the shelter from scratch, the team estimates they will need more than RM100,000 to keep operations stable. While the relocation is complete, the financial strain continues to threaten their ability to care for the animals.
Volunteers Speak of Transformation
Felix, an English teacher from the UK who has been volunteering for nine months, says the shelter’s dedication is remarkable.
“Many of these animals have had terrible lives, but here, they’re cared for and loved.”
Seeing that change makes him want to keep coming back to help. he expressed.
Shanti, a staff member, expressed her concern for the shelter’s future: “I really hope that Mr Anthony does not struggle to pay up. Because every month is a struggle. So my wish is that someone out there can truly sponsor… paying for the rent, buying us food. It would make a huge impact for us.”
Why Help Matters Now
Without consistent funding, Safe Animal Shelter risks losing the stability it fought so hard to secure. A single missed rent payment or lapse in food supply could mean these 200 animals end up back on the streets.
They hope for long-term sponsors who can help with rent, food, and medical care.
“Just do what you can to help this place out. Because if not, these dogs will have no home. These dogs would be on the streets again. And nobody really wants to see that.”
