Missing Family of Six Found Dead Inside Car Submerged in M’sian River

Family Reported Missing After Visiting Relatives

A Malaysian family of six was reported missing after they stayed overnight at a relative’s home in Taman Aman, Jitra, on Friday, 4 July 2025.

They did not return home to Jerlun the next morning as expected, prompting a missing person report on Saturday, 5 July 2025.

Family Often Stayed Overnight, Says Relative

According to Sinar Harian, Mohamad Azim’s sister, Nur Adliah Shuhada, said that it was common for the family to stay over, so she did not worry at first.

However, when she was unable to contact them and they did not return home, she filed a police report.

Submerged Car Found Near Riverbank

On Monday morning, 7 July 2025, two days later, a fully submerged Proton Iswara was found in Sungai Korok, approximately one metre from the riverbank along the Kubang Sepat–Simpang Tiga Kemboja trunk road in Jitra.

Victims Discovered Huddled in Back Seat

Fire and rescue officials discovered all six family members: two adults and four children, huddled together in the back-left seat of the submerged vehicle.

Rescuers believe they attempted to escape but were unable to do so, NST reported.

Rescuers Had to Break the Glass to Remove the Bodies

Kedah Fire and Rescue Department chief Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said that due to swelling of the bodies after nearly two days underwater, firefighters had to break the rear windshield and cut parts of the vehicle to retrieve them.

No windows were broken prior to rescue efforts.

Vehicle Likely Skidded off Road

Authorities noted tyre marks near the riverbank, suggesting the car may have skidded off the roadside slope into the river.

Identification and Investigation Underway

Police confirmed the identities of the deceased as:

  • Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32;
  • his wife, Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31;

and their four children:

  • Putra Rayyan Nur, 9;
  • Hawa Adriana Nur, 8;
  • Anayla Humaira Nur, 7;
  • and a six-month-old Tuah Haydar.
