An elderly man in Segamat, Johor, has been arrested for allegedly abusing his neighbour’s pet cat and attempting to hide the injured animal in a drain.
The shocking event occurred on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, at Taman Yayasan in Buloh Kasap, Johor.
Cat Owner’s Facebook Post Captured the Emotional Discovery
The cat’s owner, Kak Yong, shared in a Facebook post that her cat, Manis, had gone missing that morning.
Manis, a Turkish Angora, had always been kept indoors and never roamed outside, let alone pee or defecate at other people’s houses.
She only realised the cat was missing when preparing to leave for work. That morning, she had opened a window and forgotten that the cat, usually kept in a cage, had not been secured.
After realising the cat was gone, she searched her street and the nearby area, even asking workers nearby, but no one had seen the cat.
Neighbour Acting Suspiciously Near a Drain
While walking back home, she prayed to find her missing pet.
That was when she noticed her next-door neighbour behaving suspiciously near a drain, poking at something as if trying to push it further inside.
When he saw her, he quickly returned to his house, but her instincts told her to check. Praying quietly, she just hoped it wasn’t Manis.
However, what she found was indeed her missing cat in the drain and in a very bad condition.
“I pulled her out, and her face was covered in blood. My heart is shattered,” she wrote in her post.

She immediately recorded a video of the incident and went to file a police report on the same day.
Arrest Followed After a Police Report and a Review of CCTV Footage
The elderly man, believed to be in his 70s, was arrested at around 12.20 am on Wednesday (May 14), after a police report was lodged by the cat’s owner, NST reported.

According to Segamat district police chief Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah, officers reviewed CCTV footage from the neighborhood, which showed the suspect hitting the cat and throwing it into the compound of an empty house.
He was later seen tampering with a nearby drain, which led to the shocking discovery by the cat’s owner.
Man Admitted to the Abuse
When questioned, the man allegedly admitted to abusing the cat, claiming he was annoyed by its presence.
Manis Shows Signs of Recovery After Treatment, Now Resting at Home
In a recent Facebook update, Kak Yong informed her followers about Manis’s condition.
She shared that Manis had gone through several tests and treatments. Although her face was covered in blood and she appeared weak, X-ray results thankfully showed no broken bones or internal injuries to her abdomen.
However, there was fluid in her lungs, which required immediate treatment.

Hours later, Kak Yong confirmed that Manis has been discharged and is now resting at home. The fluid in her lungs has been successfully removed, and there are no longer any serious health concerns.

She requires close observation as she continues to recover.
Police Investigating Multiple Legal Violations
Authorities are investigating the incident under three separate laws:
- Section 428 of the Penal Code, which concerns acts of mischief involving the harm or killing of animals,
- Section 29(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015
- Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998
If found guilty under the Animal Welfare Act, the suspect could face up to three years in prison, a fine of RM100,000 (approx. S$30,143.52), or both.
