Theft in public restrooms is becoming an alarming concern, even in spaces people assume are safe. Thieves exploit these moments of privacy, striking quickly and leaving victims feeling violated.
One such case unfolded recently in Suria KLCC’s restroom, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic malls. A Singaporean man’s experience shows how quickly things can escalate in a seemingly safe environment.
Theft in Suria KLCC Restroom
On 30 January 2025, at approximately 9 pm, a Singaporean man, Mohd, became the victim of an audacious theft in broad daylight while using the male restroom in Suria KLCC, located on the first floor near the Dior store.
According to Mohd, as there were no hooks available in the cubicle, he placed his black bag on a small shelf behind him.
However, while he assumed the cubicle provided privacy, a thief in the adjacent cubicle seized the opportunity, reaching over the divider and stealing the bag in a matter of seconds.
It wasn’t until Mohd was about to leave the cubicle that he realized his belongings had been taken.
According to Mohd, the stolen items were:
- His black bag with (S$762) in cash,
- a Manchester United keychain, and
- a gold bar keychain.
Escaped Within 3 Minutes
Mohd quickly alerted the mall’s cleaning staff, who directed him to customer service and later to the control room.
Upon reviewing CCTV footage, the suspect was caught on camera with Mohd’s bag and the mall security confirmed that the suspect was a repeat offender known for committing similar crimes.
According to Mohd, the footage revealed that after stealing the bag, the thief walked to the lift area, opened the bag to inspect its contents, and upon seeing the cash, put on a face mask.
He then exited the mall and made his way to the nearby LRT station, managing to escape in less than three minutes.
No Follow-Up from Authorities
Following the incident, Mohd and his wife spent over two hours at the police station filing a report.
Concerned that the CCTV footage might not be retrieved in time, they returned to Suria KLCC the next day, only to discover that the authorities had yet to act on the case.
Mohd expressed his frustration and disappointment, stating,
“This lack of urgency and communication left us feeling abandoned and vulnerable during a time of crisis.”
Raising Awareness to Prevent Future Incidents
The experience caused significant stress and anxiety for both him and his wife. He emphasized that this could happen to anyone, even in what is assumed to be a private space, such as a restroom cubicle.
“As fellow Singaporeans, it’s crucial that we are aware of such risks when traveling abroad, particularly in well-known tourist destinations that should ostensibly provide a sense of security,” he said.
He hopes to raise awareness about the risks of theft in public places. He urged fellow Singaporeans traveling abroad to be cautious to avoid similar incidents from happening again.
