In Karnataka, a 30-year-old man experienced a serious medical emergency after a seemingly ordinary visit to the salon.
What began as a routine haircut turned dangerous when a complimentary head massage led to a stroke, highlighting the potential risks involved in improper neck manipulations.
A Harmless Haircut Turns Dangerous
The man visited his local salon for a haircut, where the barber offered him a free head massage. During the massage, the barber twisted his neck forcefully, causing sharp pain. Although the man felt immediate discomfort, he ignored it and went home.
Hours later, he developed slurred speech and weakness in his left arm and leg, signaling that something was seriously wrong.
Neck Manipulation Leads to Stroke
Doctors diagnosed the man with a stroke caused by a tear in his carotid artery, a vital blood vessel supplying blood to the brain. The neck twist during the massage damaged the artery, leading to the stroke.
While strokes are usually associated with conditions like high blood pressure or heart disease, sudden neck twists can also cause strokes in rare cases.
Speaking to Times of India, a neurologist mentioned in a 2022 report, ‘It happens when the masseur presses down on the neck and head hard, at times even twists the neck to produce a cracking sound. This leads to tender vessels getting injured, leading to a stroke.’
The Risks of Untrained Massage Therapists
The man underwent two months of treatment, including anticoagulants to prevent further clotting. His case highlights the dangers of neck manipulation by untrained personnel.
This incident is not isolated—similar accidents have occurred, such as in November 2022 when a woman in Hyderabad suffered a stroke after a salon visit. Experts warn that forceful neck movements during massages or chiropractic treatments can have severe consequences if performed incorrectly. Professionals should handle any neck manipulation, and any discomfort should be addressed immediately, as it may indicate an underlying problem.
Raising Awareness About Massage Risks
This case emphasizes the need for public awareness about the risks associated with neck manipulations, particularly from untrained practitioners. As more people seek such treatments, recognizing the warning signs and seeking proper care is essential.
