A heart-wrenching incident shocked Malaysians when a dog, later named Puppy Pow, was seen being dragged behind a car in Seberang Prai, Penang.
The incident occurred on September 28, 2024, approximately at 8 PM when Puppy Pow, tied to the back of a red Proton Saga, was unknowingly dragged by its leash for approximately 0.7 kilometers. The tragic event left the dog in critical condition with severe wounds on its front and hind paws.
After this post went viral on social media, many netizens and animal lovers expressed their outrage, demanding accountability for those responsible.
Quick Action by Rescuers
Puppy Pow was rescued shortly after the incident thanks to Richard, a member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Seberang Prai, who happened to witness the dog’s dire situation.
Richard immediately stopped the car and rushed the severely injured dog to a local vet for emergency medical attention. The extent of Puppy Pow’s injuries was alarming, as the dragging had caused severe abrasions and open wounds that were at risk of infection.
In parallel, a police report was lodged at Machang Bubok Police Station, initiating an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Owner’s Account of the Accident
The dog’s owner came forward soon after, admitting that the car involved was his but claiming that the dragging was unintentional.
According to his police report, while waiting at a traffic light on Jalan Kulim, Taman Sentosa, Bukit Mertajam, Penang, a concerned passerby alerted him to the distressing situation.
Upon checking his vehicle, he discovered that Puppy Pow was tied to the back of his car. He immediately contacted his wife, who revealed that his brother-in-law had tied the dog in an attempt to prevent it from wandering to a neighbor’s house.
Expressing deep remorse, the owner emphasized that the family had no intention to harm Puppy Pow, who was much loved by them. After realizing the severity of the incident, they purchased medication from a pharmacy, planning to take the dog to the vet the following morning.
OP (original poster) told the owner that Puppy Pow is currently in the hospital. Due to the injuries sustained, the vet will only be able to perform an X-ray once the pain medication takes effect.
Medical Condition and Coronavirus Diagnosis
The wounds on his paws were so extensive that stitches were not possible. Instead, the vet administered laser therapy to promote healing while preventing infection.
In addition to his physical injuries, Puppy Pow was diagnosed with canine coronavirus, which affects a dog’s digestive or respiratory systems.
Fortunately, this strain of the virus is not as life-threatening as others, and the vet is optimistic that, with proper care, Puppy Pow will recover.
SPCA’s Continued Care and Community Support
Recognizing the severity of Puppy Pow’s injuries and the emotional trauma the dog endured, the SPCA Seberang Prai, under Richard’s supervision, has taken over the responsibility for the dog’s full recovery.
Regarding the reclaiming of Puppy Pow, it would depend on whether SPCA Seberang Prai allowed it and if the family can provide proper care for the dog.
A Hopeful Recovery
According to a recent update from Penang Hope of Strays, Puppy Pow’s condition has stabilized, and many are following his recovery journey closely, hopeful for a full recovery.
The police have informed Penang Hope of Strays that this case is currently under investigation by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS). Additionally, the original owner visited the hospital on September 29 to see Puppy Pow but did not contact them to discuss medical expenses.
For now, Puppy Pow remains under the careful watch of the SPCA, receiving both physical and emotional care. Only after ensuring his well-being will they consider adoption, and that decision will depend on finding a suitable owner.
