In a recent operation, Malaysia’s Home Ministry seized a substantial amount of sex toys and other explicit materials worth over RM500,000 (approximately S$143,410.63). The two-week enforcement action spanned four states—Penang, Selangor, Johor, and Kedah resulting in the confiscation of not just sex toys but also lewd books, prints, clothing, accessories, and printing equipment, as NST’s reports.
Overview of the Operation
On June 1, 2024, Nik Yusaimi Yussof, Secretary of the Home Ministry’s Enforcement and Control Division, detailed the large-scale operation, revealing that authorities had conducted checks at 1,759 locations over the two weeks. This comprehensive effort resulted in 119 investigation files, the seizure of items valued at approximately RM1.2 million, and the arrest of 47 Malaysian men, 3 Malaysian women, and one foreign national.
Among the most notable findings were 15,602 sex toys, valued at around RM540,000 (about SGD$154,900). These items were believed to have been imported from China and Japan. The operation highlights the Home Ministry’s commitment to tackling illegal activities involving explicit materials and ensuring public safety.
Addressing Repeat Offenders and Unlicensed Printing
One significant aspect of the operation was the focus on repeat offenders. For instance, a location in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor, had previously been fined RM5,000 for selling sex toys but continued these illegal activities. This ongoing violation has led to further investigations and the potential for recommending stricter penalties for repeat offenders.
The authorities also seized unlicensed printing machines for explicit content, raising concerns about their potential distribution to young audiences. The investigation focuses on Sections 7(1) and 3(4) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, addressing public morality and security.
