On February 28th, a TikTok user by the name of @zelia2702 posted a video showcasing an intriguing building at nighttime. While the clip was short and only lasted for 16 seconds, it was enough to create a creepy atmosphere.
A TikToker took us on a thrilling tour of Block 640B on Tampines Street 62. This HDB housing block featured a stunning interior design that’s sure to make your hairs stand on end. The elevator lobby and corridor were adorned with a charming red theme, complete with red tiles on the walls and floor. And to top it all off, the red lighting created a mesmerizing yet eerie atmosphere.
The video even included the hashtag “unacceptable,” which clearly showed the TikToker’s deep admiration for the red-themed design. All in all, it’s safe to say that this housing block is not for the faint-hearted!
According to online information, the Tampines GreenVines project opened for purchase in 2018, with a total of 11 HDB flats and 1,271 units. It seems that the red-themed design has caused quite a stir among some TikTokers. Some have voiced their criticism, with a few drawing comparisons to a red light district or temple, while others have expressed concern that residents might feel intimidated entering the compound at night. While everyone is entitled to their own opinions and perspectives, it’s important to remember that the design of public housing blocks is often subject to various factors, such as budget, regulations, and community input.
After receiving complaints from residents, It seems that the red-themed design haste concern among residents, and Member of Parliament Mr. Baey has taken note. According to reports, Mr. Baey has acknowledged the complaints and agrees that the colour scheme may be inappropriate, especially in combination with the red lighting at night. He has reportedly discussed the matter with HDB and they are currently looking into the issue. It’s great to see that the concerns of the community are being heard and that action is being taken to address them.
Ceiling repainted white
It’s a relief for the residents to know that some improvements are being made to make the lift lobbies less spooky. Recently, workers were seen repainting the ceilings in white to create a brighter ambiance, which has been well-received by the residents who were interviewed. Even Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC, Baey Yam Keng, acknowledged the issue after seeing the viral TikTok video. Baey also assured residents that the HDB is actively looking into the matter, which should hopefully bring some comfort and reassurance to the community.
In Chinese tradition, red is believed to be a colour capable of warding off evil spirits. With the exception of the ground floor, the lift landing ceiling of the block has now been painted white. This seems to have had a positive effect in reducing the previously eerie atmosphere in the area. So I guess Yishun isnt the only place that such things happen….
Take a look at the before and after photos. What are your thoughts on the matter? Is it too red for you?
