The retail price of cigarettes increased by more than 10% overnight when Singapore announced a 15% rise in excise tax on all tobacco products on February 14, the day the 2023 Budget was released.
Two chain hawker businesses are giving incentives to assist smokers quit the habit of smoking. From now until February 28, smokers in Singapore may walk up to any OK Chicken Rice or Humfull Prawn Laksa hawker stall at and scan the “stop smoking” QR code to express their pledge to quit smoking within six months.
After staff members confirm the credentials via WhatsApp, registrants will get a discount voucher booklet including five S$3 vouchers for chicken rice and five S$3 vouchers for laksa. An accumulated amount of $30 for both the stalls.
Although there is no minimum purchase requirement, however each coupon can only be used one at a time. Furthermore, coupons are only valid for dine-in orders.
According to OK chicken rice’s Facebook post, after six months, the hawkers will contact the participants, and if they are successful in quitting, the hawkers would award them with another discount ticket booklet for free and without any restrictions.
The hawkers also promised prospective participants in the Facebook post that the food would be given in full amounts and that data would be collected in compliance with PDPA standards. While the coupons will be paid for out of the hawkers’ own pockets, they they are confident that Singaporeans would not take advantage of the scheme.
