A recent video depicting a roti canai seller washing his wok in drain water has ignited a wave of outrage on social media, raising concerns about food safety and hygiene at roadside stalls in Malaysia.
The short clip, posted by @/mynewshub on X, has quickly garnered over 380,000 views which captured a stall worker in a large roadside drain while cleaning the cooking utensil in filthy water.
Cleaning Wok Using Drain Water
The 24-second video reveals the seller’s unhygienic cleaning method. The woman filming the incident expresses disbelief as she comments on the unsanitary practice, stating, “These roti canai vendors wash their kuali (wok) using drain water. So disgusting.”
Despite her visible disgust and being caught in the act, he remains silent and ultimately walks away with the wok. This disturbing behavior raises significant concerns about hygiene standards in local eateries.
Public Outcry for Accountability
The footage has drawn a swift reaction from netizens, many of whom are calling for immediate action to address the unacceptable practices shown in the video.
Users in the video voiced their concerns, demanding to know the stall’s location to avoid dining there in the future. One user urged the original poster to share the location, suggesting everyone should be informed about it.
“You didn’t mention the location… Let everyone know.” Another user strongly criticized the unsanitary conditions, saying such filth should be exposed and calling out the use of drain water to clean cooking utensils.
“This filthy stuff should be fully exposed. Disgusting! The wok is shiny white but washed with drain water.”
One commenter advised others to be careful when dining at roadside stalls, expressing worries about the cleanliness of the water used and the possibility of containers that were previously used for chemicals being reused for food.
“Next time when eating at roadside stalls, you have to observe carefully. The question is, where do they get clean water from? And if they use jerry cans or those big white containers, were those containers previously used for chemicals? Think about it properly.”
While another user questioned how these vendors were allowed to run a business in the first place.
“How are they even allowed to run a business in the first place?”
The lack of transparency surrounding the stall’s whereabouts adds to the frustration, as consumers seek assurance of safe eating environments. Additionally, some netizens presumed that the worker was a foreigner.
Striving for Better Standards
As the uproar continues online, the incident has clearly sparked a much-needed conversation about hygiene practices among food vendors.
Authorities must take these concerns seriously and implement effective measures regarding the hiring of foreign workers. This includes ensuring that existing guidelines are followed closely, and promoting safe and hygienic practices in all eateries to protect consumers.
