A recent incident at Platinum Splendor Residensi in Kuala Lumpur saw a clothes dryer left running overheat, igniting a fire in a resident’s apartment.
TikTok user @/efa.taifor shared her experience online, with her caption, “Love my neighbors, they are very quick to help,” while showing thick smoke pouring from her unit as neighbors stepped in to help.
Dousing Fire from Corridor
As the flames spread to the outside of her unit, a neighbor attempted to douse the fire from the corridor.
Armed with a water hose, they worked to contain the fire until firefighters arrived, preventing further damage.
According to Efa, although they prevented the flames from spreading, the fire was still active when firefighters arrived.
However, their intervention helped bring the situation under control.
No one was seriously injured
In follow-up videos, Efa shared footage of the firefighters at the scene and other footage to confirm that her family had safely evacuated.
Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, though her husband and father-in-law sustained minor burns in the rush to escape.
Safety Tips for Home Appliances: Avoiding Fire Risks
This incident shows the dangers of leaving things unattended while away from home. To reduce risk, here are tips to be on the safer side:
- Unplug or Turn Off Appliances: Avoid leaving high-heat appliances, such as dryers, irons, or ovens, running if you’re awake or asleep.
- Regular Maintenance: Appliances over five years old should be routinely checked and serviced, as wear and tear can make them more vulnerable to overheating.
- Use Smoke Detectors: Ensure smoke alarms are functional and placed in key areas, like kitchens and laundry rooms.
- Items to Never Leave On: In addition to dryers, avoid leaving items such as space heaters, stovetops, and even curling irons running while out of the house.
The quick response from her neighbors and the fire department kept this incident from becoming a greater disaster.
