A dramatic political story drew global attention after Venezuela’s First Lady, Cilia Flores, appeared in a New York court showing visible injuries. She and her husband, Nicolás Maduro, were captured during a late-night military operation in Caracas.

The incident, which took place on 3 January, quickly became international news due to its sudden nature and serious accusations.

Late-Night Raid In Caracas

The capture happened during the early hours of Saturday, 3 January, when U.S. military forces raided the couple’s compound in Caracas, Venezuela’s capital. The operation happened very quickly and without public warning. Both Maduro and Flores were taken into custody during the raid and later flown to the United States.

Reports said Maduro tried to reach a safe room inside the compound. However, he was stopped before he could secure the door. The operation ended with both of them under arrest, marking a major moment in Venezuela’s long-running political crisis.

First Court Appearance In New York

On Monday, 5 January, the couple appeared in federal court in New York City. They were dressed in prison clothing and wore leg shackles as they entered the courtroom. During the hearing, Flores identified herself as “first lady of the Republic of Venezuela.” Maduro also spoke briefly and stated that he was not guilty.

Both pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. Maduro faces four serious charges, including narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine. The indictment also names their son, two senior Venezuelan officials, and an alleged gang leader.

Attorney Claims Serious Injuries

Flores’ lawyer, Mark Donnelly, told the court that she suffered “significant injuries” during the capture. Flores arrived at court with bandages on her face and complained of pain in her ribs. Her attorney said the injuries happened during what he described as an abduction.

The judge overseeing the case, U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, instructed prosecutors to ensure Flores receives proper medical care while in custody.

Trump’s Comments On The Operation

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke publicly about the raid during a press conference. He said Maduro almost reached safety, but failed to close a heavy door in time.

Trump added that even if the door had been shut, it would not have stopped the forces involved.

A Case Watched Around The World

The arrests have drawn strong reactions worldwide. While the legal process continues in the U.S., the situation remains tense. The courtroom appearance, the injuries, and the bold statements made by both defendants have kept international attention firmly on this unfolding case.
