Vance Details Proposed US-Iran Agreement
US Vice President JD Vance outlined what he said would be included in the US-Iran peace agreement expected to be signed this week, describing it as a ‘win-win for the American people’ in a recorded speech released on Monday.
Vance called it a ‘great peace deal,’ saying it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping while ensuring that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.
“What this deal means is that the Strait of Hormuz is open immediately. You’re already seeing oil and gas prices come down just over the past 24 hours,” Vance said.
“Number two, it ensures that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. And we have to back up for a second and appreciate that what the president has done is completely decimated Iran’s nuclear programme,” he added.
Two Paths For Iran
According to Vance, the agreement presents Iran with two possible paths, emphasising that Tehran could be ‘welcomed into the world economy’ if it permanently abandons efforts to rebuild its nuclear programme.
“If, on the other hand, they try to rebuild that nuclear program, they’re never going to have the resources in order to do so. It’s a win-win for the American people. We ensure Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon either way,” Vance asserted.
The vice president said the coming months would reveal whether Tehran is willing to dismantle its nuclear programme permanently, adding that the administration wants Iran to prosper economically if it complies with the agreement.
“Now it’s really up to the Iranians,” Vance continued, “We’re going to see if they’re serious about dismantling that program for the long term. If they do, the president has said we want their country to be successful.”
Peace Deal Announced By Leaders
Earlier on Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the US and Iran agreed to a ‘permanent’ and ‘immediate’ end of the war on all fronts, ‘including in Lebanon.’ However, Israel has said it is not party to the deal.
Both Tehran and Washington confirmed that a deal has been made but the contents have not been revealed. Media reports have pointed to a 60-day ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to the US naval blockade, sanctions relief for Iran and talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Donald Trump posted ‘let the oil flow’ and said the Strait would open on Friday. Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabad said talks would continue during a 60-day period to form a wider deal.
The agreement is set to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday, June 19.
