Typhoon Yagi Devastates Vietnam, Drivers Shield Motorists with Their Vehicles

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, as Typhoon Yagi ravaged parts of Vietnam, a remarkable act of heroism unfolded on a bridge in Hanoi. Quick-thinking drivers used their cars to shield motorbikes from the typhoon’s powerful winds, preventing what could have been a tragic situation. This selfless act, which occurred around midday, was captured and quickly went viral on social media.

The Storm’s Devastation

Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam early on the morning of September 7, 2024, and has since lost much of its strength. Despite this, its impact was severe. The storm caused extensive destruction across Vietnam, China, and the Philippines, resulting in at least 24 deaths and many injuries.

According to AFP, the damage in Vietnam was especially severe, affecting mainly the northern and central regions of the country.

Impact on Vietnam

In Vietnam, Typhoon Yagi caused the deaths of 21 people and injured 229 others. The storm triggered severe landslides, including one in Hoa Binh province on the early morning of September 7th, which buried a family of four. The heavy rains and strong winds, starting late on September 6th and continuing through the night, were major factors in these tragic events.

In the Hoang Lien Son mountains, a landslide triggered by the typhoon claimed the lives of six more people, including a newborn and a one-year-old boy. Local authorities reported that heavy rain, which had been falling steadily for over 24 hours, weakened the soil and caused the landslide.

Extensive Damage

The typhoon also caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure. In Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the storm hit hardest on the evening of September 7th. It sank 30 vessels and damaged nearly 3,300 houses.

Over 120,000 hectares of crops were destroyed, severely affecting the region’s agriculture. In Hai Phong, floodwaters rose to half a meter (1.6 feet) by the early hours of September 8th, and power outages were reported due to downed power lines and damaged poles.

The storm’s aftermath was devastating, with rooftops torn off buildings, motorbikes overturned, and debris littering the streets. On Sunday morning, September 8th, many residents and business owners woke up to assess the damage, facing significant financial losses.

Typhoon Yagi’s Path and Climate Impact

Before hitting Vietnam, Typhoon Yagi wreaked havoc in southern China and the Philippines, leaving at least 24 people dead and many others injured. The storm made landfall in southern China on September 5, 2024, before moving west and striking the Philippines soon after.
