A viral video shared on 7 September 2025 showed former Malaysian Batu MP Tian Chua being confronted by security personnel at Suria KLCC.

The clip captured him and a group of activists carrying Palestinian flags and sticks as they were approached by guards and asked to leave the mall.

The group can be heard chanting “Free Free Palestine” inside the shopping centre before the scuffle unfolded.

Additionally, according to other reports, a person off-camera remarked that he had to be taken out over the “long stick,” referring to the flag pole he was holding.

KLCC Issues Statement

Following the incident, Suria KLCC released a statement on its official Facebook page. The mall explained that its security team intervened because “long wooden sticks” are not allowed in the mall and are considered prohibited items within the premises.

It added that the decision was not politically motivated but instead followed its long-standing security rules, which bar items that could pose safety risks or disturb other visitors.

Tian Chua’s Rally Participation

Before arriving at Suria KLCC, Tian Chua and several others had joined a Palestine solidarity gathering in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Free Malaysia Today, Tian Chua had participated in the “Trump Don’t Come” rally in Kuala Lumpur, that same day.

The rally called for the cancellation of U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Malaysia.

Tian Chua Clarifies His Side

According to The Rakyat Post, Tian Chua explained that after the solidarity gathering, some activists wanted to get food in the mall, while others were making their way to the train station when they passed by KLCC.

He said security guards stopped the group at the entrance, asking them to take off their keffiyehs, discard placards, and even tried to seize their Palestinian flags.

He further clarified that there had been no protest within the mall itself, only people exercising their right to wear what they chose.

PAS Youth Calls for an Apology

On 7 September, Selangor PAS Youth criticised Suria KLCC’s handling of the matter and demanded a public apology to Tian Chua.

Its chief, Mohamed Sukri Omar, said it was disgraceful for guards to treat an elderly activist in such a manner, calling it disrespectful to Malaysians who support Palestine, Malaysia Gazette reported.

Mohamed Sukri also urged businesses not to bow to “external pressure” to the point of silencing local voices for Palestine.

Kredit video: @wfatinsuryanie
