On 13 October, in Taiwan, a seat dispute on a Keelung city bus escalated into a full-blown brawl yesterday evening.

A 57-year-old woman, Wei, and an elderly man, Yang, were caught on camera swinging slippers and throwing kicks inside the bus.

The video spread on social media, spurring comments expressing amusement and questions.

Fight Breaks Out Over Priority Seat

The incident happened around 6:40 p.m., as the bus was heading toward Chenghuang Temple. Yang was seated by the window in a priority seat reserved for the elderly or those with mobility issues.

Wei walked in and tried to sit in the aisle seat beside him. Yang, who has difficulty walking, asked where she would get off.

He wanted to know who would exit first so he could plan his movement. Wei apparently found the question intrusive and unreasonable. Voices rose.

Passengers looked on as the verbal dispute quickly turned physical.

Slippers and Kicks Fly

Video footage recorded by a bystander shows Wei striking Yang on the head with a slipper. Yang retaliated with multiple kicks, landing blows to Wei. Both of them lost their slippers during the scuffle.

Wei picked up a slipper—but it was Yang’s by mistake—and ran off the bus. She then reboarded to retrieve her own slipper, sparking another round of fighting.

At one point, Yang even pressed his foot to her face while trying to defend himself, according to video footage.

The bus driver, surnamed Hsu, eventually intervened. He forced both passengers off the bus to prevent further chaos. Other passengers were reportedly shocked, but unharmed.

Police Involvement

Keelung police confirmed that no formal complaint had been filed yet. Officers proactively contacted both Wei and Yang to clarify the incident.

During the investigation, authorities discovered that Wei is wanted for a theft case. She allegedly failed to appear in court and is currently a wanted suspect.

Police Warning

The Keelung City Police Department, First Precinct, urged the public to remain calm during disputes. They reminded citizens that violence has consequences and that the police maintain zero tolerance for physical assaults.

The incident comes just days after a previous incident involving a passenger kicking another in a Taiwan MRT. This altercation serves as a reminder that even minor disputes, like seat arrangements on a bus, can escalate quickly if tempers flare.
