Singapore has a new walking club that is putting social connection at the centre of its activities. Walkie Talkie describes its walks as a way for people to meet new friends while taking part in guided conversations, small-group activities and simple games.
Not Just A Walk
According to the club, walking is mainly an excuse to bring people together. Its founders wanted to create a social space where friendships could develop naturally, instead of relying on one-time events where conversations may stay at the small-talk level.
Before joining a walk, participants are asked to complete a short questionnaire. Their answers are then used to place them into smaller groups based on their personalities and interests. This is intended to give participants a more comfortable setting to talk with others.
Small Groups And Activities
Participants will not stay with the same people throughout the entire walk. The club plans to have members switch groups, allowing them to meet more people during the activity. Guided conversations will also be used to help participants find topics to discuss.
Walkie Talkie said it is keeping the overall group size small so that everyone has a chance to properly connect. The club also described the first event as part of its trial phase, inviting people to help build the community from its early stages.
The first walk was scheduled for July 18, with registration available through the club’s Instagram bio or by direct message. The organisers said they would select participants based on their questionnaire responses because they had received a large number of sign-ups.
Interest From Singaporeans
The idea attracted questions and suggestions from people online. Some users asked whether dogs could join the walks, while others suggested future activities such as coastal walks, trail walks and birding walks.
The organisers said dogs could not be confirmed for the current walks because participants would be walking closely together. However, they said they would consider the suggestion for future events. The club also confirmed that joining the walk was free.
Other users asked how the organisers planned to prevent awkward moments between strangers. Walkie Talkie said it would work to create a welcoming and inclusive environment, noting that everyone would be meeting new people.
With interest growing after the announcement, the organisers said more walks would be held in the future to include people who were placed on the waitlist. The club is continuing to develop its format around smaller groups, rotating conversations and activities designed to help participants interact.
