On August 9, 2024, the announcement of the “Burning Sun Surabaya” event, set for August 31, 2024, in Surabaya, Indonesia, triggered significant controversy. The event, organized by TSV Management, included a promotional poster featuring Seungri’s image. This sparked widespread criticism due to Seungri’s past involvement in the Burning Sun scandal. A viral thread on X by user @yomyluv_ raised public concerns, criticizing the association with Seungri and the choice of venue—a gentlemen’s club—as insensitive and inappropriate.

Background on the Scandal

The Burning Sun scandal, which erupted in 2019, involved a nightclub in Seoul co-owned by Seungri. The club became infamous for severe allegations including sexual assault, drugging, and illegal filming and distribution of videos featuring women. Seungri faced multiple charges, such as facilitating prostitution, embezzlement, and illegal gambling, leading to his removal from the entertainment industry and a three year prison sentence. Although he was released in February 2023, the scandal continues to impact his public image.

Seungri’s Response

On August 11, 2024, Seungri addressed the situation in an interview with Ilgan Sports. He denied any plans to attend the “Burning Sun Surabaya” event and expressed confusion about the event’s location. Seungri clarified that he did not understand why the event used the Burning Sun name and reiterated his desire for a quiet life.

TSV Management’s Apology

In response to the backlash, TSV Management and the Gentlemen’s Club issued an apology. Two staff members from the Gentlemen’s Club addressed the confusion surrounding the event. According to Wolipop and their clarification video, they clarified that the event was not associated with Seungri and did not involve any illegal activities.

They explained that the event aimed to promote safety in nightlife venues and provide a secure space for K-pop fans. Due to the confusion and misleading reports, they decided to cancel the event. They apologized for any misunderstandings and for using Seungri’s image in their promotional materials. They also expressed gratitude to everyone for their patience and understanding. Originally, the event was planned as a private gathering for those over 21, with no fees charged.

The controversy surrounding the event has further complicated Seungri’s efforts to rehabilitate his public image. The association with the Burning Sun name and the event’s setting have kept the past scandal in the spotlight, continuing to affect his reputation.
